Music Ministries

Music is an integral part of the worship life of St. John’s United Methodist Church. Building on a strong tradition of sacred music in this place, we strive to offer praise to God and to encourage others through the following ensembles. Opportunities for soloists and instrumentalists are also available. For more information about our Music Ministry, please contact the church office.

In celebration of the restoration of our 1924 Möller pipe organ, our Music Ministry is pleased to present our inaugural concert series in 2019.

Adult Choirs

The Adult Choir program offers two distinct ensembles for interested choral singers.

The Chancel Choir, with 30 active members, sings weekly at the 11:00 am worship service and at other services throughout the year. This group sings a wide variety of music, including masterworks with orchestral accompaniment.

The Chancel Choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm during the school year and every Sunday at 10:00 am. For those who cannot commit to singing with us on a regular basis, watch the church newsletter for information about combined choirs for special events, as well as pick-up choirs during the summer.

Handbells

The Handbell Choir program offers options for ringers of all ability levels.

The Chancel Ringers play on a full five-octave compliment of Schulmerich English Handbells and participate in worship on a bi-monthly basis. Music reading skills are required for joining this advanced ensemble. The Chancel Ringers rehearse on Sundays at 6:00 pm during the school year.

The Golden Bells, originally developed as a senior ensemble, now serves as a beginning/intermediate outlet for ringers of all ages. Music reading skills are helpful but not a requirement for joining this group. The Golden Bells rehearse on Thursdays at 10:00 am during the school year.

Children's Music Ministry

The Children’s Choir program offers three age-appropriate ensembles for young musicians ages three years old through fifth grade.

The Cherub Choir - three years through pre-K
Junior Choristers - kindergarten through second grade
Senior Choristers - third grade though fifth grade.

Rehearsals for all ensembles incorporate some type of instruction on music theory, worship participation, hymn education, and vocal training. They also make use of various types of instruments. The Children's Choirs participate in worship on a bi-monthly basis and present other special programs throughout the year. The Children's Choirs rehearse on Sundays at 5:00 pm during the school year.

Praise Bands

The Praise Bands of our church allow instrumentalists and vocalists to use their talents in a more modern worship setting.

The St. John's Praise Band provides musical leadership at the Contemporary Worship Service each week, with song selections ranging from popular worship songs to reworked versions of familiar hymns. This group of 12 musicians, comprised of members and friends of our congregation, serves on a rotating basis. The Praise Band rehearses on Saturdays at 1:00 pm.

The BASIC Praise Band is a musical outlet for the musical youth in the congregation. This group offers music for Youth Sunday each year and at other youth worship events. The BASIC Praise Band rehearses on Sundays at 4:00 pm during the school year.
