Opportunities to Serve
Serve in Mission
Hand in Hand Tutoring
Work one on one weekly during the school year with an elementary student at Northside School for the Arts.
We help feed the hungry in Rock Hill as a member of a 10-church coalition that delivers meals to families in need. In addition, we help to sponsor the Christmas Eve dinner and gifts at Flint Hill Baptist Church and a back-to-school picnic with school supplies in August. We meet the 4th Monday of the month at 5:00PM in the St. John’s Center kitchen to assemble and deliver the meals.
Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen
Volunteers needed to prepare and serve lunch on the second Wednesday of each month, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Crawford Road. St. John’s joins with other local churches to provide a daily noon meal for anyone in need that comes to lunch.
Monthly Missions Focus
Each month, St. John’s picks a different agency to support by collecting items the agency needs and educating the congregation on what the agency does. We can always use people to coordinate and organize one of St. John’s Monthly Missions Focuses
First Food Sundays
Deliver food items collected at St. John’s once a month to local agencies – Project Hope and Pilgrim’s Inn.
Society of St. Andrew's Food Drop
During the harvest season food that, becuase of aesthetic imperfections, could not go to market is gleaned from nearby farms and dropped in the St. John's parking lot to be bagged and distributed to local agencies and families, individuals and communities in need.
Once each 12 weeks St’s John’s is host to up to four families in our community who are homeless. We need one church group to provide a meal each night for the group and at least two people to act as over night hosts on each of the seven nights. We also need volunteers to lead a program for the children of Family Promise during their stay at St. John’s.
Habitat for Humanity
Twice per year St. John is committed to providing a crew of both professional and novice builders to work alongside the prospective homeowner to construct their new home. Also needed are volunteers to coordinate and organize volunteers to provide breakfast and lunch on the Saturdays that St. John’s works on a Habitat House.
Camp Glenayr/Epworth Children's Home Mission Trip
Once or twice a year, a team of skilled and unskilled volunteers work at Epworth Children's Home, or their off-site facility, Camp Glenayr. The work consists of anything from preventative maintenance, to demolition and remodeling, to new construction.
Prepare, serve or deliver meals from St. John’s to the needy in our community on the Saturday before Easter.
CROP Hunger Walk
Join the St. John’s team and walk 10 K for the poor of our community and the world. Occurs every October.
Help sort the presents collected or deliver the gifts collected to the agencies supported by the St. John’s Angel Tree.
Nicaragua Mission Trip
Each summer St. John’s sends a group of volunteers to Nicaragua. In addition to providing a dental clinic, working at a mountain coffee cooperative, and visiting a mission site which St. John’s supports, participants are able to work with the people of Nicaragua on the projects they have decided are most important to them.
